Fit for life?

“Put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If it eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, I’ll buy you a new car.”

Slightly provocative statement by Harvey Diamond co-author of health & diet book "Fit for Life".

I believe we probably come from two distinctly different directions in the consideration of this statement but I found that it made me wonder WHAT ON EARTH it is that causes humans ever to loose this gentle and tender intimacy with animals that we all naturally seem to possess as children.

The question leads me to this quote by St. John Chrysostom:

"Surely we ought to show animals great kindness and gentleness for many reasons, but, above all, because they are of the same origin as ourselves."
